K2 winter expedition: Denis Urubko is ready for the great adventure

 - Athletes

We are in the final days of the countdown: on 29 December, Denis Urubko will leave for Pakistan to try K2 (8611 m) first winter ascent. K2 is the only 8000er not yet climbed in winter and Denis aims for this great goal together with legendary Polish Krzysztof Wielicki (leader), Adam Bielecki, Marek Chmielarski, Rafal Fronia, Janusz Golab, Marcin Kaczkan, Artur Malek, Piotr Tomala, Jaroslaw Botor (doctor) and Dariusz Zaluski (cameraman).

Eleven mountaineers to achieve an over and over attempted goal, to complete a great story in which the best result is still the 7800 meters reached in 2003 by Urubko and his Polish mates leaded by Wielicki. They attempted K2 via the North Ridge: the same route that Denis climbed in alpine style in October 2007. So Denis knows K2 very well and he is ready to do his best for the success. «During the last summer I completed some interesting ascents in Tien Shan range – Denis said us – and I felt well. So I decided to attempt K2 in winter, to realize an old great dream».

For the new attempt, Wielicki has chosen the south face of the mountain. About the route – Abruzzi Spur or Cesen – the final decision will depend from terrain conditions. In any case Urubko is confident: the team is strong, experienced and motivated and if weather will not be always terrible, K2 could lose soon its title of invincible mountain in winter.
